We understand and empathise with this situation. All procedures will be explained in an appropriate manner to the child, helping the child to understand and cope with these dental situations.
Children are quick learners and with the right support, they will learn that they do have the ability to cope with dental treatment despite being fearful. This can be a positive experience in the growth and development of a child. The paediatric dentist will always discuss with parents the various options and the most suitable way to assist your child in having dental treatment.
Sometimes sedation can be used to help in dental anxiety. Inhalation sedation (or gas and air) can be provided to assist slightly older children (and adults!) who are anxious in having dental treatment, or even when having slightly more complex dental procedures being carried out.
In some instances, a general anaesthetic may be the most appropriate and safe way to deliver the dental treatment, where your child is unconscious and completely pain free. General anaesthesia, if required, will be carried out at a nearby hospital.
