Fixed Braces

A fixed brace has tiny blocks called brackets (metal or ceramic), which are stuck onto your teeth, and wires are attached to these brackets to move the teeth. Because the brace is fixed to the teeth for the duration of treatment, you should not try to remove it as this may cause damage to your teeth.

A fixed brace can initially cause some soreness and discomfort inside the mouth, which can take 5-7 days to subside. Use the wax given to you by Our orthodontist to prevent rubbing of the brace against your tongue and the insides of your lips and cheeks. Your teeth may also ache after the fitting of the brace and after adjustment visits, and you may find that a painkiller (which you normally take for a headache) helps.

Removable Braces

When first fitted, your removable brace can cause some soreness for the first few days. You may also find that your speech sounds different; again, this will improve after a few days. Your removable brace should be worn day and night. You can remove it for meals, brushing your teeth, playing contact sports and swimming.

Our orthodontist will show you how to keep the brace clean, and how to insert and remove it. When you are not wearing it, keep the brace in the brace box given to you. Be gentle when removing and inserting the brace. Avoid clicking the brace in and out repeatedly with your tongue, as this will cause the brace to break. If you lose your brace or it breaks, please ring Pristine Braces as soon as is reasonably possible for an appointment.

Functional Appliances

A functional appliance may be a fixed or removable brace that works on the upper and lower teeth to help correct the position of the teeth and improve the bite. An example of a common functional appliance is the Twin Block appliance.

Like a removable brace, when first fitted, a functional appliance can cause some soreness of the teeth and facial muscles for a few days. This will gradually disappear the more you wear the brace. You may also find that your speech sounds different; again, this will improve after a few days.

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment is the process of wearing a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth. No brackets and wires, and none of the restrictions that come with metal braces.

Retainers

Once your orthodontic treatment has been completed, the period called retention begins. In the retention period, the teeth are held in their new positions so as to prevent them from moving back to their original positions (this is called relapse).

The teeth are retained using fixed or removable retainers. Our orthodontist will advise you on the type of retainer that is best for you.

Functional Appliances

Mouthguards

When engaging in active and contact sports, a mouthguard should be worn to protect the braces, teeth and gums from any possible trauma. As the teeth are moving during orthodontic treatment, normal mouthguards may not fit over your braces or can become ill-fitting very quickly.

If you require a mouthguard during your orthodontic treatment, our orthodontist can make a mouthguard for you to wear over your braces. This type of custom-made mouthguard is made using an impression of your teeth with the braces on. It therefore fits comfortably over the braces and allows for some movement of the teeth during the orthodontic treatment.

Different orthodontic treatment has different prices. The fee varies according to the complexity of treatment and is best decided following consultation. At your consultation visit, you will be advised of the total fee for your orthodontic treatment; which covers all of your orthodontic treatment from start to finish, retainers (2 sets) and a period of review after retainers are fitted. You pay 50% of the total cost when braces are fixed on and the rest of cost can be paid over the duration of the treatment.

Please bear in mind that procedures performed by your general dentist e.g. extractions (for braces or otherwise), fillings and cleaning are not included in your orthodontic treatment fee.

Yes. The dentist would have to look at your teeth to decide the best course of treatment.

The biological process involved in moving teeth is the same at any age. Children and adults can both benefit from braces.

It is recommended that every child receive an evaluation by age seven (7). Treatment may take a little longer for adults. Because an adult's facial bones are no longer growing, certain corrections may not be accomplished with braces alone and may require surgery.

Depending on the complexity of treatment it can take anytime between 1 to 2 and a half year.

Be careful not to damage the teeth and brace by avoiding hard chewy foods as these can cause the brace to break. If the brace breaks repeatedly, your overall treatment time may be lengthened. Please ring for an appointment as soon as is reasonably possible if damage occurs to the brace.

Food and drinks to avoid (to prevent damage to the teeth and brace)

  • Snacks and drinks high in sugar especially between meals and just before bed
  • Chewy foods e.g. chewing gum, toffees
  • Hard foods e.g. apples, crusty rolls (cut these into small pieces before eating them)
  • Fizzy drinks and large amounts of acidic fruit juices.

When wearing a fixed brace, your oral hygiene must be excellent. You will be taught how to maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout brace wear. You will also be given the hygiene kit containing all the items necessary for you to keep your teeth and gums healthy. If you don’t look after your teeth and gums whilst wearing a fixed brace, your teeth will become permanently stained with unsightly marks and your gums will become unhealthy.

If you play contact sports, it is advised that you wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and brace from impact. Such a mouthguard can be provided at Pristine Braces.
